tea break

这段时间叫做tea break(茶休):an intermission from work, usually in the middle of the morning or afternoon, for a cup oftea, a snack, etc.

Our bloody-minded foreman wouldn't give us a tea break.

astorm in a teacup

If someone exaggerates a problem or makes a small problem seem far greater than it really is, then they aremaking a storm in a tea cup.

That coupleoften quarrel, but it is a storm in a tea cup.

Storm in ateacup是大惊小怪的英式英语表达,美式英语的说法是tempest in a teapot.此外,大惊小怪相似的说法还有:astorm in a cream-bowl,a tempest in a glass ofwater,a storm in a hand-washbasin.

Her brother is gorgeous. We all like him.

A: This is the first time I've been in China, and everything here fascinated me. But there is something I can never figure out!

B: What's wrong? Did anything puzzle you, speak it up and see if I can help you out.

A: Good! You turn up so timely! I am just expecting some good explanation. You know the other day one of my Chinese friends was celebrating his birthday so I asked him what he would like for a birthday present. Do you know what he said? "No, no! Don't give me anything. Don't be polite!" can you believe it?

B: Actually, I can well believe it. It's a Chinese way of expressing his being humble and reserved. But most often the speaker doesn't really mean refusal unless he firmly insists. Chinese people don't easily accept the given things only when he has contributed to the giver or there is an intimacy. And they don't want their friends "pofei" which means to spend money.

A: What did he mean by refusing to accept a present from me then?

B: I don't think he was actually refusing to accept a present from you. It was just his way of being "polite". He didn't mean to be rude and certainly he didn't mean to offend you.

A: Well, how do you like that? And what was I supposed to do or say in such a situation?

B: You should first understand that Chinese people are not straightforward in some situation. In such a situation I suggest you just insist, and if your friend is an elderly gentleman, you probably have to insist several times, but even then I doubt if he will ever give you a direct answer. Or you can buy him a gift directly without asking him. I think he will be satisfied with whatever you buy him. Actually what counts is your good intention.

A: So you mean buying a gift is a good choice than not, right?

　　B: I think so.

　　A: Thank you.

　　Notes:

　　1. figure out. But there is something I can never figure out!

它的英文解释是这样的：find the solution to (a problem or question) or understand the meaning of

e.g: It didn't take the children long to figure out the correct answer.

　　2. help you out. Speak it up and see if I can help you out.

Help sb out 是帮助解决难题(帮助摆脱困境,帮助完成,救出)也就是help sb in a particular situation of need.

e.g: He refused to accept help out of a false sense of pride.

You turn up so timely. I am just expecting some good explanation.

　　4. It's a Chinese way of expressing his being humble and reserved.

中国人一般给人帮过忙或者是关系亲密的朋友之间才接受馈赠，unless he has contributed to the giver or there's an intimacy. 他们不想让朋友们破费，也就是spend money on buying the gift.

　　5. A的疑惑澄清了，他问道what was I supposed to do or say in such a situation. be supposed to do something是：该怎么做

e.g: I'm supposed to go on a diet.

　　6. Actually what counts is your good intention. B跟A说， You should first understand that Chinese people are not straightforward in some situation. Actually what counts is your good intention.

e.g: Knowledge without common sense counts for little.

You're in the pink !
You look fine !" You're in the pink !"

He is bouncy.
"他精力充沛"美国人说："He is bouncy." I get mind of you " 比 "I heard a lot about you."

"Did you get lost ?"
有人开会迟到了，你若对他说 "You are late ."，听起来象是废话，若说"Did you get lost ?"，则更能让他歉然，可别说成"Get lost!"

Do you have the time?
别人征求你的意见，问能否开窗户等，你要说"You can do that ." Do you have the time? May I have you name?"要比"What's your name ?

I would rather not say
It's my secret ,don't ask such a personal question ." I would rather not say ."(还是别说了吧！)。

"It's on the tip of my tongue."
Well ...""Let me see" "Just a moment "或"It's on the tip of my tongue."

While I remember...
To change the subject" "Before I forget" "While I remember" "Mind you "都是既地道又受欢迎的表达。

I got it
用"I see"或"I got it "就顺耳得多，要是不懂就说"I'm not clear about it ." It's past my understanding"或"It's beyond me ."

1. I'm supposed to go on a diet/get a raise.
2. The meeting was scheduled for two hours, but it is not over yet.
3. Would you care to see it/ sit down for a while?
4. Do you mind if I take tomorrow off?
5. I'm afraid that it's not going to work out.
6. Is everything under control?
7. It really depends on who is in charge.
8. It involves a lot of hard work.
9. That might be in your favor.

Mr. Smith, I would like to discuss something with you.（史密斯先生，我想和商量些事情.）

I'm pleased that you've added new responsibilities to my job and I appreciate the opportunity.（我非常高兴你给我新的工作职责，谢谢你给我这样的机会。）

I’m supposed to get a raise.

例如：to raise salaries（提高工资）to raise the rent（提高租金）相同的表达有：“I need a raise. 或者Could you give me a raise?

I'm pleased that you've added new responsibilities to my job and I appreciate the opportunity. I would like to further discuss my new responsibilities and the possibility of a pay raise for performing them well.
Please let me know if you have some time available this week.

A: Mr. Brown, I would like to discuss something with you.
B: What can I do for you?
A: Well I’ve been working here for two years and I’m supposed to get a raise.
B: I understand .When was your last time you got a raise ?
A: Fifteen months ago.
B: Ok, I’ll think about it .
A: I appreciate your help.

I will laugh at the world.

Henceforth will l shed only tears of sweat, for those of sadness or remorse or frustration are of no value in the market place whilst each smile can be exchanged for gold and each kind word, spoken from my heart, can build a castle.

Never will l allow myself to become so important, so wise, so dignified, so powerful, that I forget how to laugh at myself and my world. In this matter I will always remain as a child, for only as a cl1ild am I given the ability to look up to others; and so long as I look up to another I will never grow too long for my cot.

And so long as I can laugh never will I be poor. This, then, is one of nature's greatest gifts, and l will waste it no more. Only with laughter and happiness can l truly become a success. Only with laughter and happiness can I enjoy the fruits of my labor. Were it not so, far better would it be to fail, for happiness is the wine that sharpens the taste of the meal. To enjoy success I must have happiness, and laughter will be the maiden who serves me.

Freeing the Mind to Forget
Young brains can forget painful memories, but old ones tend not to. An animal study in the journal Science finds that it may be possible to restore the old brain to its younger, more pliable state. Karen Hopkin reports

Some things are hard to remember. Others are hard to forget—especially things that are traumatic. But kids, it turns out, are better than adults at forgetting the bad stuff. Now scientists think they know why. According to an animal study in the September 4th issue of the journal Science, the brains of adults erect physical barriers that keep painful memories intact.

As adults, events that emotionally disturb us tend to get seared into our brains. And those memories can resurface, causing anxiety, fear and even post-traumatic stress disorder. But young brains are much more resilient—and can even erase unpleasant memories.

To get a better handle on this youthful forgetting, scientists studied the brains of young and old rats. They found that in adult brains, a physical net forms around certain cells in the amygdala, a structure associated with emotional memories. Adults that had been trained to associate a mild foot shock with a specific sound would flinch when they just heard the sound. But using a drug to dissolve this barrier restored the older rats’ ability to extinguish fearful memories. So rats that got the net-busting treatment stayed calm when they heard the sound.

One of the few instances where a net loss is a real gain.

When I was young, I went looking for gold in California. I never found enough to make me rich. But I did discover a beautiful part of the country. It was called “the Stanislau.” The Stanislau was like Heaven on Earth. It had bright green hills and deep forests where soft winds touched the trees.

Other men, also looking for gold, had reached the Stanislau hills of California many years before I did. They had built a town in the valley with sidewalks and stores, banks and schools. They had also built pretty little houses for their families.

At first, they found a lot of gold in the Stanislau hills. But their good luck did not last. After a few years, the gold disappeared. By the time I reached the Stanislau, all the people were gone, too.

Grass now grew in the streets. And the little houses were covered by wild rose bushes. Only the sound of insects filled the air as I walked through the empty town that summer day so long ago. Then, I realized I was not alone after all.

A man was smiling at me as he stood in front of one of the little houses. This house was not covered by wild rose bushes. A nice little garden in front of the house was full of blue and yellow flowers. White curtains hung from the windows and floated in the soft summer wind.

Still smiling, the man opened the door of his house and motioned to me. I went inside and could not believe my eyes. I had been living for weeks in rough mining camps with other gold miners. We slept on the hard ground, ate canned beans from cold metal plates and spent our days in the difficult search for gold.

Here in this little house, my spirit seemed to come to life again.

I saw a bright rug on the shining wooden floor. Pictures hung all around the room. And on little tables there were seashells, books and china vases full of flowers. A woman had made this house into a home.

The pleasure I felt in my heart must have shown on my face. The man read my thoughts. “Yes,” he smiled, “it is all her work. Everything in this room has felt the touch of her hand.”

One of the pictures on the wall was not hanging straight. He noticed it and went to fix it. He stepped back several times to make sure the picture was really straight. Then he gave it a gentle touch with his hand.

“She always does that,” he explained to me. “It is like the finishing pat a mother gives her child’s hair after she has brushed it. I have seen her fix all these things so often that I can do it just the way she does. I don’t know why I do it. I just do it.”

As he talked, I realized there was something in this room that he wanted me to discover. I looked around. When my eyes reached a corner of the room near the fireplace, he broke into a happy laugh and rubbed his hands together.

“That’s it!” he cried out. “You have found it! I knew you would. It is her picture. I went to a little black shelf that held a small picture of the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. There was a sweetness and softness in the woman’s expression that I had never seen before.

The man took the picture from my hands and stared at it. “She was nineteen on her last birthday. That was the day we were married. When you see her…oh, just wait until you meet her!”

“Where is she now?” I asked.

“Oh, she is away,” the man sighed, putting the picture back on the little black shelf. “She went to visit her parents. They live forty or fifty miles from here. She has been gone two weeks today.”

“When will she be back?” I asked. “Well, this is Wednesday,” he said slowly. “She will be back on Saturday, in the evening.”

I felt a sharp sense of regret. “I am sorry, because I will be gone by then,” I said.

“Gone? No! Why should you go? Don’t go. She will be so sorry. You see, she likes to have people come and stay with us.”

“No, I really must leave,” I said firmly.

He picked up her picture and held it before my eyes. “Here,” he said. “Now you tell her to her face that you could have stayed to meet her and you would not.”

Something made me change my mind as I looked at the picture for a second time. I decided to stay.

The man told me his name was Henry.

That night, Henry and I talked about many different things, but mainly about her. The next day passed quietly.

Thursday evening we had a visitor. He was a big, grey-haired miner named Tom. “I just came for a few minutes to ask when she is coming home,” he explained. “Is there any news?”

“Oh yes,” the man replied. “I got a letter. Would you like to hear it? He took a yellowed letter out of his shirt pocket and read it to us. It was full of loving messages to him and to other people – their close friends and neighbors. When the man finished reading it, he looked at his friend. “Oh no, you are doing it again, Tom! You always cry when I read a letter from her. I’m going to tell her this time!”

“No, you must not do that, Henry,” the grey-haired miner said. “I am getting old. And any little sorrow makes me cry. I really was hoping she would be here tonight.”

The next day, Friday, another old miner came to visit. He asked to hear the letter. The message in it made him cry, too. “We all miss her so much,” he said. Saturday finally came. I found I was looking at my watch very often. Henry noticed this. “You don’t think something has happened to her, do you?” he asked me.

I smiled and said that I was sure she was just fine. But he did not seem satisfied.

I was glad to see his two friends, Tom and Joe, coming down the road as the sun began to set. The old miners were carrying guitars. They also brought flowers and a bottle of whiskey. They put the flowers in vases and began to play some fast and lively songs on their guitars.

Henry’s friends kept giving him glasses of whiskey, which they made him drink. When I reached for one of the two glasses left on the table, Tom stopped my arm. “Drop that glass and take the other one!” he whispered. He gave the remaining glass of whiskey to Henry just as the clock began to strike midnight.

Henry emptied the glass. His face grew whiter and whiter. “Boys,” he said, “I am feeling sick. I want to lie down.”

Henry was asleep almost before the words were out of his mouth.

In a moment, his two friends had picked him up and carried him into the bedroom. They closed the door and came back. They seemed to be getting ready to leave. So I said, “Please don’t go gentlemen. She will not know me. I am a stranger to her.”

They looked at each other. “His wife has been dead for nineteen years,” Tom said.

“Dead?” I whispered.

“Dead or worse,” he said.

“She went to see her parents about six months after she got married. On her way back, on a Saturday evening in June, when she was almost here, the Indians captured her. No one ever saw her again. Henry lost his mind. He thinks she is still alive. When June comes, he thinks she has gone on her trip to see her parents. Then he begins to wait for her to come back. He gets out that old letter. And we come around to visit so he can read it to us.

“On the Saturday night she is supposed to come home, we come here to be with him. We put a sleeping drug in his drink so he will sleep through the night. Then he is all right for another year.”

Joe picked up his hat and his guitar. “We have done this every June for nineteen years,” he said. “The first year there were twenty-seven of us. Now just the two of us are left.” He opened the door of the pretty little house. And the two old men disappeared into the darkness of the Stanislau.
